The employer contribution

A contribution is money. It is not a reason to let HR become your ISP, and it is not automatically tax-free just because someone said ‘hybrid’.

In 2020, companies threw money at kitchen tables and called it infrastructure. In 2026 some still do, some have stopped, and some have a preferred-supplier PDF that names a retailer who does not serve the postcode. A contribution is a good thing. It becomes a bad thing when it dictates a 24-month business circuit for a two-day hybrid, or when it vanishes in a leaver process and takes the children’s Wi‑Fi with it.

Money, not a network

The clean model: they pay you, you buy a consumer line that fits the premises, you keep the account when you quit. The messy model: they are the customer, you are a user, HR is the helpdesk.

If they insist on the messy model, get the leaver and move-house process in writing. Households have to keep existing after jobs.

Tax is a payroll question

People assert exemptions on the internet. HMRC writes manuals. The difference will show up in your code. Ask the people who run PAYE.

Do not pick a more expensive tariff because ‘it’s pre-tax’. Know whether it actually is.

What to buy with it

Upload that carries the work days, a backup path if deadlines are real, a cable to the spare room. Not a vanity gigabit because the stipend has to be spent.

If the stipend is smaller than the delta to a decent FTTP, you were always going to buy the FTTP. The stipend is a discount, not a product.

HR is not a network operator. Do not let a PDF become your last mile.

Take the contribution. Buy the line the house needs. Leave HR out of the ONT, unless they are genuinely paying for an SLA you will use.
