A business line in a house

Somewhere in the 2010s it became aspirational to put a home on a business tariff. The static IP, the ‘priority’, the invoice with a company name. Then One Touch Switch arrived for consumers and the kitchen-table LTD found itself outside the easy path, paying an exit fee to a contract that thought it was a shop. Professionalism is a backup path and an honest upload. It is not a different Ofcom annex unless you need that annex.

Which path you are on

Ask, in writing: is this product eligible for One Touch Switch? If no, how do I cease, how long, what does it cost? If they cannot say, you do not have a professional line. You have a muddle.

Failed matches on ‘business’ in a residential address are common. The hub is not being snobbish. It is being literal.

What you actually bought

Often: a public IP, a better phone tree, a paper SLA that still depends on the same Openreach visit. Sometimes: a genuine leased-line personality that does not belong in a semi.

If the honest need is the IP, buy the IP. If the honest need is a four-hour fix, price that SLA against a 4G backup you control.

Moving back to consumer

Cease the business product on its own rules, order consumer FTTP with overlap, do not try to ‘convert’ in a chat and hope the hub notices.

Keep the company name off the new account if you want the consumer path next time. Letters Ltd on a doorbell do not impress a match engine.

A VAT number does not splice fibre. It can, however, take you out of a consumer right.

Be a business on Companies House if you are one. Be a household on the switch if you are one. Mixing them is how easy paths disappear.
