Hybrid days and the line

Hybrid working produced a new kind of overbuy: the home line as a status copy of the office core. People who are in a workplace three days a week still take 24 months of 2.2 Gbit because the poster found them on a Sunday. The home days still need a competent upload. They do not need a data-centre identity. The calendar is a spec. Use it.

Count the days

Two home days of calls is a modest WAN if the upload is honest. Five home days of two workers is a different product. Write the number down before you shop.

If the number might change with a new manager, the term length is part of the spec. Rolling exists for this.

Empty Tuesdays still bill

You cannot pause a household line because you commuted. The smart-TV and the rest of the house remain. That argues for a sane always-on tariff, not for a fantasy of metered work-only broadband.

It also argues against paying a work premium on speed you use as a screensaver three days a week.

When the policy shifts

Back-to-office drives make expensive home lines look silly. Full-remote drives make thin FTTC look hostile. Re-open the comparison when the email lands, not two rises later.

Employer contributions should be recast at the same time. A stipend for five home days is not a stipend for one.

Hybrid is a diary. Tariffs are monthly. Do not let a poster forget the diary.

A hybrid household still deserves a decent line. It does not deserve a 24-month monument to a floorplan you visit twice a week.
