Two workers, one upload

The British home was not wired for two simultaneous livelihoods. It was wired for a telly and a homework laptop. Then a cabinet that could upload a photograph if you made a cup of tea was asked to carry two professional codecs, a cloud drive and a doorbell. The industry answered with gigabit posters. The posters face the wrong way. Upload is the working-from-home product. Everything else is interior design.

The spec, without a personality

A modern video codec in HD is a few megabits up, more if you share screens or sit in 4K vanity. Two of those, plus a laptop syncing, plus a partner on a phone call, is how a 1.5 Mbit pair becomes a row.

You do not need 900 down. You need a floor on up that does not collapse at 9:31 when the street goes to work. Symmetric FTTP mid-tiers exist for this. So do some cable SKUs. FTTC often does not.

Measure the hour you invoice

Sunday night speed tests are folklore. Tuesday 9:30 is the product. Use ethernet if you can, so the radio does not take the blame.

If ethernet upload is fine and one desk dies, that desk has a radio problem. If ethernet upload is 2 Mbit, stop talking about mesh.

If the cabinet cannot

Order FTTP if it is live. If it is not, a rolling FWA with a measured busy hour can carry two calls better than a proud copper. A second SIM for one worker is a smaller hammer than a second contract on the same pair.

Staggering meetings is a valid short-term product. It should have an end date, like any other stopgap.

Gigabit is a down word. Payroll is an up word. Buy the up.

Two workers are a household speed map, not a romantic failure. Size the upload. Then go back to work.
