The line that is also an office
If the spare room is an office, the line is workplace infrastructure. Buy it like you would buy a chair: for the hours you actually sit.

Working from home turned a consumer product into an industrial one without changing the advert. The same teaser, the same hub in a cupboard, the same upload that was designed for sending the occasional photo. Then three people joined a call and the camera froze, and someone said “we need gigabit”. They may need upload, a cable, and a provider who answers the phone. Gigabit is optional.
If the household also has a care device or a card terminal, say so before you order. An office that shares a socket with a safety device is not a lifestyle article. It is two jobs on one pair of fibres.
Reliability is the workplace spec
Offices used to buy SLAs. Homes buy teasers. If your job cannot survive a morning fault, you need a named backup: a 5G router already on a shelf, a neighbour, a co-working space, a phone hotspot you have tested. Imaginary backups fail at 9:55am. Write the plan down. Then buy the line for upload and a fault path you will actually use.
When a business product is honest
Static IP, a real SLA, a switch that is not residential One Touch Switch — those are reasons. A “business” label that is just a higher monthly and a different hold music is not. Do not buy a firm’s contract for a household vibe. If the spare room is a registered company, say so at match time so you do not break the residential path.
A backup is in the spec
Upload, ethernet to the desk, and a tested 4G path. That is the work-from-home product. A 2.2 Gbit poster is not. Hybrid days still bill seven days — size for the home days, do not copy the office core. If the employer contributes, take cash and keep the account in the household name unless an SLA demands otherwise. The Work department in this issue is the rest of the desk.

Figures move. Prices, coverage and eligibility must be confirmed with the provider. OneTouchSwitch is not Ofcom, TOTSCo or a broadband network. Last fact-checked 10 September 2026.

The upload you are not buying
Download is the poster. Upload is the working day. If the household sends as well as receives, the second number is the product.

A map of the house, not the advert
Count the simultaneous lives in the house. Then buy a line that can carry them. Then stop.

The landline that still matters
The copper phone network is closing. Most homes will not notice. The ones that will — telecare, lift lines, alarm panels — need a plan before the socket goes quiet.
