Calls at eight a.m.
Eight o’clock is when the street, the house and the mast all go to work. Design for that minute, not for a Sunday speed test.

There is a minute in British life when everyone becomes a broadcaster: the school iPad, the stand-up, the clinic, the delivery slot, the doorbell. The network that looked ample at 10pm is asked for a different shape of traffic. People describe this as ‘the internet being bad in the mornings’, as if weather. It is a map: WAN busy hour, house busy hour, radio busy hour. Separate them and the minute often behaves.
Three busy hours in one kettle
The street: cabinets and masts fill. The house: updates, cameras, a TV that chose 8:01 to patch. The radio: bodies, microwaves, a hub in a cupboard.
Fix them in that order of honesty. A new tariff will not pause the TV. A new hub will not invent cabinet upload. Ethernet will not quiet the exchange. Use the right lever.
The meeting window as a setting
For the half hour that pays the mortgage, the household can be a QoS policy: backups paused, 4K forbidden, the other worker on ethernet too if you have two.
This is not forever. It is a window. People who refuse the window and also refuse to buy upload want a magic box. There isn’t one.
When to change plant
Ethernet, pauses, a calmer radio — and 8am still dies. Then the WAN is the minute. FTTP, a better radio WAN, a backup path for that call. Do not keep buying 2.4 GHz plasters.
Measure once with everything else off. If it still fails, you have permission to spend.
| If… | Pull | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Only on Wi‑Fi | Ethernet / better AP | A new 900 Mbit |
| House full of updates | Pause / QoS window | Shouting |
| Ethernet still dies | Different WAN | Wi‑Fi 7 in the same minute |
Eight a.m. is a specification. Treat it like one, not like weather.
The early call is where households discover they bought a television product. Buy a work product for the minute that pays, or at least give that minute the cable.

Two workers, one upload
The household that needs two concurrent calls is a specification. It is not a lifestyle brand, and it is not 900 megabits down.

The hub that lives with the coats
Under-stairs is a fine place for vacuum cleaners. It is a hostile place for the only radio you own.

A map of the house, not the advert
Count the simultaneous lives in the house. Then buy a line that can carry them. Then stop.
