The deadline backup path
A backup that has never been turned on is décor. A backup that was tested on Sunday is a product.

Home workers buy speed when they meant to buy boredom: a second path that works when the first one does not. The industry is happy to sell a faster first path. A 4G router in a drawer looks unglamorous next to a 2.2 Gbit poster. On the morning the ONT dies and a client is waiting, glamour is a red PON light. Boredom is a SIM that still has data.
What good looks like
A labelled box: router, PSU, SIM, login, a date you last tested. A speed that can carry the VPN and a call. A family rule that the TV does not join that SSID.
Optional: dual-WAN so it happens without you. Optional is how kits rot. If you will not configure failover, a drawer you will actually open is better.
Test it like a fire drill
Once a month, unplug the ONT, join the backup, open the VPN, join a call, send the file. Ten minutes. Write the date on the box.
If the SIM has expired, the backup was a story. If the mast is busy at 9:00, know that before a deadline, and keep a second operator’s SIM if you must.
Do not double your single point of failure
If the main line is already 5G home, a 4G backup on the same mast is a costume. Then you want a different operator, a dish, or a remaining copper as the boring spare.
Wired main plus radio spare is the classic. Radio main plus wired spare is also a classic, if the spare still exists.

Speed is a brag. A second path is a job.
The backup path is part of the work-from-home spec, next to the chair and the upload. Buy it ugly. Test it often.
