Cuckoo, the retailer

A bright brand on a wholesale network is still a bill. Put it next to the quieter names on the same fibre.

The market has learned to hatch friendly animals: a cuckoo, a bird, a pun, a bright app. Underneath, a CityFibre ONT and a wholesale bitstream. That is not a scandal. It is the model. The scandal is comparing the animal to BT on a street that has no Openreach FTTP yet, or ignoring the animal on a street that has three CityFibre retailers and a habit of staying put.

Same spine, different feathers

TOOB, Vodafone, TalkTalk’s CityFibre products, Cuckoo, and whoever is next: they buy the same sort of access. Your job is the year-one cost, the rise, the support hours, the upload on the specific SKU.

A pretty brand can still be the cheapest honest year. A pretty brand can also be a 24-month trap with good illustration. Look at the numbers.

Where they are not

If the address check has no CityFibre, no amount of brand energy will invent it. You need Openreach, cable, rural alt-net, radio, or patience.

Do not delay a needed Openreach switch because a national podcast likes a retailer you cannot order.

Voice, kit, and the small print

Alt-net retailers vary wildly on digital voice, hub quality, and whether you may use your own router. Those details are the adult comparison once the plant matches.

If you still need a reliable inbound phone, test it in cooling-off. A bird logo does not guarantee a working 999 path on a power cut unless they say so and you have a backup.

A mascot is not a network. It is a shop sign on a wholesale door.

Friendly brands on wholesale fibre are how competition looks in 2026. Treat them as competitors, not as pets.
