Mid-contract variations
A variation is not automatically an insult, and it is not automatically a trapdoor. It is a clause with a consequence.

Contracts were always going to change: networks change, laws change, April exists. The adult version is a letter that says what will happen, what you can do, and by when. The rude version is a quieter bill and a hope you will not notice. When the letter comes, people freeze, then miss the window, then pay an exit in November they could have skipped in April. The variation is not the disaster. The unread date is.
Agreed versus new
A pounds rise that sat in the order PDF is performance of the deal. Annoying, not a variation surprise. A new formula, a new fee, a new restriction — that is the other pile.
If you cannot tell which pile you are in, ask them to say ‘this was in your contract at sale’ or ‘this is a variation with a right to cancel’. Make them pick.
The window
Often about 30 days from notice. Put it on a calendar the hour you open the email. Switching takes days. The window does not care about your week in Wales.
You can shop inside the window. You should. Retention teams know this and will call on day 28. Shop on day 1.
Non-price variations
Upload profile quietly reduced, outbound port blocked, hub rental invented, voice withdrawn. These are why you read past the pounds.
If the line still suits you at the new rules, stay. If it does not, the exit is the product you paid for by being a customer they needed to vary.
| It says | Pile | Move |
|---|---|---|
| The £2 April from your PDF | Agreed | Stay or shop on arithmetic, not on outrage |
| A new pounds or a new rule | Variation | Diary the window, compare, maybe leave free |
| We may change things sometimes | Fog | Ask them to classify it |
A variation without a diary is just a more expensive stay.
They are allowed to change a deal if the law and the clause say so. You are allowed to leave. The date in the letter is the whole sport.

The price-rise exit right
A rise you were not told, in pounds, at sale, is often a door. A rise you signed is a sum. Know which letter you are holding.

Inflation rises were supposed to be over
The era of ‘CPI plus 3.9’ as a personality was supposed to end. Read the clause you actually signed. Some of it ended. Some of it put on a hat.

The pounds-and-pence year
CPI plus 3.9% is no longer allowed on a new contract. A number in pounds still is. The difference only helps if you read it before you click.

The call you get when you try to leave
A retention offer is a new contract wearing last year’s password. Treat it like any other deal: year, term, rise, and whether the line still fits the house.
