The ONT on the wall

Full fibre arrives as a small white rectangle and a sudden interest in skirting boards. The optical network terminal is the thing that makes the trench useful. People then hide it in a cupboard because it is ugly, or they hang a picture over it, or they tug the fibre tail because the vacuum caught it. Each of those is a short story with a long ticket.

What it is

Light in, packets out. The ONT is the operator’s modem. Your router sits after it. Confusing the two is how people ‘reboot the fibre’ by restarting the radio and then declare the network down.

Power needs a socket that will not be switched off with the room lights. The number of households that kill their WAN with a mood-lighting circuit is not small.

Where it lives

Engineers put ONTs where fibre can land: hallway, under-stairs, meter cupboard, sometimes a garage. You get a vote if you are in on install day and the route allows it. You do not get a vote two months later without a visit.

A cupboard ONT is fine if ethernet then runs to a hub in the house. A cupboard ONT with the hub stacked on top of it is how you buy mesh as a coping strategy.

Do not relocate it as décor

The fibre tail is not speaker cable. Bend radius, staples, and the cat are all in play. If you need the box elsewhere, book the operator. A self-move that works until it rains is still a self-move that will fail on a Sunday.

When you switch retailer on Openreach, leave the ONT. The new provider should reuse it. A second box appearing is a different network, not a collectible.

The ONT is plant. The hub is furniture. Only one of those you may shuffle.

Respect the small white box. Most ‘fibre is down’ evenings begin with something cheap and domestic happening to it.
