The morning the old hub dies

There is a British breakfast in which two white boxes pulse on a sideboard and nobody knows which SSID is the job. Children have joined the old one. A parent has joined the new one and declared the internet broken because the printer is on the other. The WAN may be fine. The house is in a naming collision. Ten minutes of procedure would have beaten an hour of blame.

Prove the WAN first

Lights on the ONT, lights on the new hub, one laptop on ethernet or the new SSID, a speed test, a call. That is ‘up’.

Only then clone names, migrate bulbs, and think about the parcel. Decorating first is how a failed provision hides until Friday.

One radio

Turn the old hub’s radio off, or unplug it, once the new WAN is proven. Keeping it ‘just in case’ past a real cease is a paperweight. Keeping it during a maybe-cease is a test — see the early-cease piece if the new WAN never arrives.

If you use your own router, this morning is authentication day. VLAN, password, then radios.

The sulk list

Printers, TVs, bulbs, a thermostat, a console. Budget half an hour. This is not compensation-grade pain. It is the cost of a new radio world.

Write the new password on paper once. Households lose hours to a manager’s phone that autocompletes the old one.

The old hub is not a spare network. It is a parcel with a deadline.

The first morning is a procedure you can write on a sticky note. Write it. The comparison was the hard part; this is just boxes.
