The early-termination charge is the most mythologised number in British broadband. People talk about it as a trap, a scam, a moral failing. It is usually simpler: you agreed to pay for a term, you want to leave early, the provider wants some of the money they priced the teaser against. The adult move is to get the pounds, not the folklore.

Get the number for a date

Do not use last year’s forum screenshot. Ask: “What would the early-termination charge be if I left on the 15th of next month?” Get it in writing. If they cannot produce it, that is a complaints issue, not a reason to guess £400 and stay forever.

When waiting is the whole strategy

Four months left and a fat ETC against a modest saving is a wait. Set a reminder. Read the end-of-contract letter when it comes. Paying to leave is rational when the new first-year saving, on a deal that is actually at the premises, is larger than the fee plus setup. It is not rational as a mood.
