Early termination charges when you switch broadband

How UK broadband exit fees work, how to ask for the figure, and how to weigh them against a new deal.

What an early termination charge is

If you leave before the minimum term ends, many providers charge an early termination charge (ETC). It is a contract matter between you and the current provider. A comparison site cannot waive it or confirm the live figure.

How to get a reliable number

Ask your current provider in writing. The gaining provider should also receive relevant contract information during a One Touch Switch, but you should still read it. Do not rely on a forum post or an old bill.

When waiting is the calmer option

If you have only a few months left and the exit fee is large, the first-year saving on a new deal can disappear. Use the Should I switch calculator for an estimate, then confirm the ETC before you order.
