The ombudsman path
The ombudsman is a process with a pack of PDFs, not a revenge hotline. Used late, it is weak. Used on time, it is how bills get unwound.

British ombudsmen are unglamorous and, when used properly, effective. They are not a stage. The providers know the eight-week clock. Some of them deadlock you politely so you can go. Some of them stall until you lose the will. Your job is to run their complaint process like a project, then file a pack that a stranger can understand in four minutes. Four minutes is about what you get.
When you may go
Deadlock letter, or eight weeks from the complaint with no resolution. Start the complaint in writing so the clock is real.
A tweet is not a complaint. A chat that vanished is a weak clock. Email.
The pack
One page: who you are, the account, what happened in dated bullets, what you want in pounds or actions. Then PDFs: contract, letters, speed tests, tickets.
What you want must be possible: money, a cease without a fee, a repair. ‘Make them suffer’ is not possible.
What they will not
They will not build FTTP, sack a CEO, or rewrite Ofcom. They will not take a new switching order for you.
If you need a line on Tuesday, you still need a backup path and a gaining provider. The ombudsman is for the bill and the behaviour, on a slower clock.
| Stage | You need | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Written complaint to provider | Keep the acknowledgement |
| Deadlock or 8 weeks | The letter or the calendar | File the pack |
| Decision | Read it; they usually follow it | Pay or refund as ordered; escalate only if the scheme allows a review |
An ombudsman reads timelines. Write one. They do not read novels about how you feel about April.
The path is slow, cheap, and real. It is not a personality. It is how leftover fees come back, if you can wait — and how you should still keep a 4G router while you wait.

Complain like an adult
A good complaint is a dated story with a desired outcome. A bad complaint is a novel without a request.

Compensation, without the folklore
There is a scheme. There are amounts. There are also a dozen forum posts that invent extra zeros. Here is the adult version.

The price-rise exit right
A rise you were not told, in pounds, at sale, is often a door. A rise you signed is a sum. Know which letter you are holding.

Ofcom is not your salesperson
The regulator writes rules. It does not bless posters. Any advert that implies otherwise is borrowing a logo it does not own.
