Satellite as a last line

Satellite broadband used to mean a geostationary apology: a second of delay, a rain-fade folklore, a price that made the copper look charming. Low-earth orbit changed the argument. It did not repeal physics. A dish is still a dish. A tree is still a tree. A monthly fee that would buy city FTTP twice is still a monthly fee. For a minority of UK premises it is, nevertheless, the first line that can carry a job.

Physics, not brand

Latency on low-earth orbit is better than the old sky. It is still worse than a fibre drop. Video calls usually cope. Competitive shooters and some VPNs feel the gap. Upload is the number rural households should stare at, because the copper they are leaving often has almost none.

Weather, obstruction and congestion still exist. A clear southern or open sky view is part of the product. If the only mounting point looks into a sycamore, you are not buying broadband. You are buying an argument with a tree.

Cost against the cabinet you have

Compare satellite against the line you actually have, not against a London 1 Gbit poster. A £30 FTTC that cannot carry a call is more expensive than a £75 dish that can. A £30 FTTC that is merely irritating is a different sum.

Hardware, mount, electrician if the roof is awkward, and the monthly: that is the first year. If a fibre date is real and near, satellite can be a rental. If the date has slipped twice, treat satellite as the line.

How the USO sits beside the dish

The Universal Service Obligation is a right to request a decent broadband service, not a right to fibre, and not a right to a pretty price. Some quotes come back as radio. Some come back as a figure nobody will pay. Some come back as ‘you will be built soon, wait’.

Run the USO if you qualify. Do not pause a working satellite plan for a quote that might be a letter. Parallel paths are allowed.

A last line is allowed to be ugly. It is not allowed to be a fantasy.

Satellite is not a personality. It is a tool for the premises the trench has not reached. Use it that way, and stop apologising for the roof.
