Overnight backups and upload

Households discovered cloud backup in the same decade they discovered working from home, and then asked a cabinet to do both. The cabinet declined, quietly, by still being at 2 Mbit up at 3am. People blame the backup app, then the hub, then the cloud vendor. The small number on the right of the speed test was the whole novel. Overnight is a good time to use upload. It is not a way to invent it.

Do the sum

Library size divided by measured upload, plus overhead, plus the fact you will not get a perfect pipe. If the answer is 30 hours and you have an 8-hour night, you do not have a schedule. You have a plant problem.

A 150/150 FTTP turns that sum into a dull evening. That is what symmetric is for, not a personality.

A curfew

If the plant can finish, still give the job a curfew so 8am calls live. Most clients have a schedule. Use it. QoS on a grown-up router if the client is stupid.

Two workers plus a backup with no curfew is how stand-ups pixelate. The backup is not the mortgage. The call might be.

Radio

Do not discover fair-use with a photo library. If radio is the line, backups are a trickle or a different path (a disk in a bag, a work network, a dated FTTP).

Failover SIMs are not a backup WAN for a terabyte. Label them.

Down is a poster. Up is the library. Buy the up if the library matters.

Overnight is a gift of unused upload. First you have to have the upload. The rest is a schedule so breakfast can still join a call.
