Ethernet in a rented flat

Renters are told they cannot have a proper network because they cannot have a proper hole. That sentence has sold a lot of mesh. A rented flat still has skirting, a letterbox gap nobody should use, a cupboard, and sometimes a unused telephone plate. Between ‘drill the party wall’ and ‘three satellites and a prayer’ there is a 15-metre cable and a conversation.

Reversible runs

Flat ethernet under a carpet edge, clipped along skirting with removable clips, or tucked behind a sofa: ugly in a way that only you will see. Gigabit is gigabit even when it is beige.

Avoid trapping doors, and never pierce a fire door to save a radio. If the only path is through a protected door, you do not have a cable path. You have a mesh problem, honestly admitted.

Ask once, in writing

A two-line email: you want to run a thin cable along skirting, no drilling of walls, removed at exit. Many agents will ignore it, which is not a no. A no should be specific.

If they refuse even clips, you still have furniture-level runs and a better access point. The deposit argument is about holes and paint, not about packets.

When cable cannot exist

Then powerline, MoCA on coax if the building has it, or mesh with ethernet backhaul on the bits you can reach. Each is a compromise with a different failure mode: electrical noise, ancient splitters, radio congestion.

Buy one compromise well rather than three badly. A single good access point on a short cable beats a mesh religion in a one-bed.

A tenancy forbids damage. It does not require you to live inside a microwave.

Renters deserve a line that works at the desk. Start with a cable you can roll up. Buy mesh when the building beats you, not when a poster dares you.
