A house move is a new address, a cease of the old service, and often a new install. It is not the same job as switching provider in the home you are leaving.

Add a move date. Without it, this is a checklist, not a timetable.

  1. Before you book. Check the new address separately from the old one. A move is not a One Touch Switch of the old line onto a new street.
  2. As soon as the date is firm. Ask the current provider whether the minimum term ends, transfers, or triggers an early-termination charge when you leave the premises.
  3. Once the new address can be ordered. Order the new service for a date you can be at home if an engineer is required. Do not cancel the old service until the new provider tells you the cease is part of their order.
  4. Moving week. Keep the order reference, the old router, and a way to get online if activation slips. Return borrowed kit to the address the old provider names.

Questions for the current provider

  • What is the early-termination charge, in pounds, if I cease on the move date?
  • Will an engineer need access to the new home, and what happens if I miss that appointment?
  • Does any alarm, telecare or television service depend on the old line?
  • Does a home move waive the minimum term, or only reduce it?

Then check the new address, not the old postcode. See also moving house.
